Biography

Christine Avenarius holds a PhD in sociocultural anthropology from the University of Cologne in Germany and served for 20 years as a professor of anthropology at East Carolina University in North Carolina, USA before leaving academia in 2017 and returning to Germany. In addition to researching climate change perceptions and engaging students in service-learning projects with local communities in Eastern North Carolina, she conducted ethnography in rural China and Namibia. Since leaving academia she has designed and managed projects for an educational firm that implements projects for the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs of Germany. She is passionate about applying anthropology in work and life. Her interests include incorporating the 17 sustainable development goals of the UN agenda 2030 into the process of finding innovative solutions for businesses and organizations anticipating future challenges and applying a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection and analysis, including text analysis and social network analysis.
